The Sedgefield Middle School Spartan Band has a long history of tradition and excellence. Our band program has been in existence and continually operating since the opening of the school in 1956. We are the longest running fine arts and elective offering here at Sedgefield Middle School.
Our band program also has a rich history of excellence in which many of our students consistently earn spots in our district, region, and state level honors bands. Former members of our band members like Mekel Rogers have also gone on to have lucrative careers in music as an educator and composer.
SMS BAND PHILOSOPHY
The Sedgefield Middle School Band philosophy is to learn good musicianship through an educational process that leads to performance and enjoyment. The overall goal of the Sedgefield Middle School Band is to help students recognize and develop their interests and talents in instrumental music; gain an appreciation in the area of performance through high personal and group standards; and the cultivation of loyalty and dependability between the band director, parents, and students alike.
Music is a true transmission of culture that gives every student the opportunity to explore, and express him or herself in a positive manner. The instrumental music program at Sedgefield will always strive to create an inclusive environment that stimulates creativity and positive attitudes through the enjoyment of music. By becoming a part of a program such as this students will be exposed to other cultures, and have an make connections to other subject matter like Math, Literacy, History, and Art. Involvement in programs like band also helps students to develop socially, while working collectively and creatively with others towards a common goal.
ABOUT THE DIRECTOR
Ms. Kimpson is a 17 year Music Education veteran. She has served as the Director of Bands at Sedgefield Middle School in Charlotte, N.C. since 2005. Ms. Kimpson has also taught General Music within the Cabarrus County School System, as well as High School Band and Orchestra in the Rock Hill, S.C. public school system. Ms. Kimpson's instructional experience also includes her tenure as an adjunct Music Instructor and Conference Pianist for Clinton Junior College, also located in Rock Hill, S.C.
Ms. Kimpson is a Graduate of Claflin University where she obtained her BA in Music Performance, the University of South Carolina, as well as Winthrop University where she obtained her MME and M.Ed. She is also a past National Council Member and Chapter Advisor of Tau Beta Sigma National Honorary Band Sorority. Ms. Kimpson is also a member of the National Association for Music Education, the North Carolina Music Educator's Association, the North Carolina Bandmasters Association, the South Central District Bandmasters Association, and the Minority Band Directors Association.
Ms. Kimpson's area of musical expertise lie within piano pedagody, band, and low strings instruction. Ms. Kimpson is both a classically trained pianist, woodwind specialist, and music arranger. She performs with various local groups, and also maintains a studio where she teaches music privately. Ms. Kimpson is also a GRAMMY Award nominee, and a recipient of the John Lennon Education Foundation Sponsorship for Hands on production/recording technology in Music Education.
